No Room at the Inn
Yesterday on a whim because I had been thinking about AI, I watched a good YouTube video by someone from Anthropic. She gave a very “Bay Area” presentation clearly not aimed at a boomer audience. It was good. I had a look on their web site and they are advertising something like 500 open positions. Clearly there is competition for staff and I expect that salaries are not minimum wage.
AI does create jobs if only in AI.
I am near 100% sure that despite having a distant background in science research there is no way that they would employ me. There is no room at the inn, so to speak, even though there are vacancies.
Even though high level applications of AI might be interesting to me, I am not cut of the right cloth and that which I have is frayed at the edges.
I am pretty much unemployable. I could become a barista perhaps when my leg is fixed or work on the till at Waitrose.
I had a weird dream this morning set in Oxford. In a department which I never (strangely) visited. I have not darkened that door.
There are quite a few grumbles by people my age on the internet about grey-unemployability. People like Boris and Keir are my contemporaries and they ran countries. I cut lawns and cook dinner. Life works out differently.
There is perhaps a prejudice against the greys.
Our age is a wasteful age. There is much about recycling plastic and paper. There is no sign tattooed on my packaging. So nobody knows what to do with me. I may end up in land fill though I have asked to be cremated. Perhaps they could send me to an energy from municipal waste incinerator.

Maybe I need to go to a tattoo parlour…
In principle we are at a pivot point for the year as we head into darker days. I have a decision to make in the next few days. It is knife or no knife. I may be able to bring forward my hip replacement or wait until next year.
The world is a busy place and many people have lots on their minds to keep them busy. They have their agendas to pursue. Viewed from a distance I am but a tiny blip in the background noise of what happens on planet earth.
It is funny how people view each other and what conclusions they can draw from a very limited data set. Hearsay is rarely reliable. It is usually best to check with sources.
I may need to check my assumptions…
