A hundred years ago there was considerable discontent which enabled an isolationist anti-immigration ideology to flourish. We have a strong line of anti-Islamist thinking currently. It seems politics must always have its bogey men, whose fault the entire mess is. Funny how it is always someone else. The blame must lie elsewhere.
In the seventies the UK National Front, the NF, rallied to a call of Make Britain Great Again.

Have a look at their policies, do they remind you of anything current?
The simmering discontent has not gone away and it is always easier to stir up hate and division than it is to seed brotherly love and compassion. Putting ideological salt on an open wound is easy to do, it does not however heal.
We are at a pivot point which might swing into an increasingly hostile and volatile environment. We have recently had black shirts with balaclavas marching in England.
I remember the anti-fascist league and the protests against the NF. Linton Kwesi Johnson sung about how the Special Patrol Group (SPG) killed Blair Peach. There are schools named after Blair Peach these days.
I don’t know how things may pan out. As an immigrant the tide may turn against us and we may be repatriated, probably not in a cross channel inflatable dinghy.
It is safe to say that fear and anger are on the rise. Nastiness is resurgent.
The world is edgy and not very warm and nurturing at the moment. A harsh cold wind blows….
