The temptation of having some kind of advantage over someone else is very hard to resist. This need to know, to gain advantage, is a foundation stone of intelligence services. It is also a business practice. And these days people can stalk each other to their heart’s content on the internet. They can become obsessed with romantic partners past, present and future. They can gather “intelligence” on each other, telling themselves that it is wise so to do. It can be a bit dark and obsessive. It is not entirely healthy but it is irresistible, like the high calorie meal the doctor forbids. That foreseen metabolic disease may never come; a juicy morsel of temptation is dangling. Yum.
Sometimes they can find out things which they do not expect. After having opened Pandora’s box they cannot close it again. Some things are impossible to unsee. This secret-squirrel information will then colour any future. Sooner or later the fact of espionage may ruin any possible interaction. It does not occur that stalking might preclude any ongoing meaningful relationship. What is poor in the beginning rarely grows to bountiful fruition.
Beginnings are very important times
That obsession with control, that desire to gather all the gossip and goods on someone is strong. People are fearful. There is always more information to gather before action. One must be really certain and so the stake out continues ad infinitum. That is what people do, they stake each other out, and snoop on them from a distance maybe even from behind a VPN. It is a part of the way of life for some, their modus operandi. They do not want a level playing field nor do they play with a straight bat.
Sometimes they stumble on something completely unanticipated. They may have no idea what if anything to do. It cannot be undone.
